Bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Oman

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Petro Poroshenko met with the Minister of Trade and Industry from the Sultanate of Oman, Makbul bin Ali bin Sultan at the Foreign Ministry’s offices in Ukraine. The two sides discussed ways of intensifying political dialog between the two countries and deepening trade relations.

Mr. Poroshenko noted the importance of investment from Oman to the country’s economy. In particular, he said Omani capital could go into investment projects developing Ukraine’s ports and business infrastructure, the national telecoms operator Ukrtelecom, preparations for Euro-2012, and the development of the farm sector.

In turn, Minister Makbul bin Sultan expressed Oman’s interest in organizing deliveries of Ukrainian wheat, especially to supply other Arabic countries in the Persian Gulf region. His Oman counterpart agreed with Mr. Poroshenko’s proposition to consider setting up an Inter-Governmental Bilateral Commission on Cooperation in Trade and Commerce and in organizing a business forum in Ukraine by the end of this year. Mr. Makbul bin Sultan also mentioned setting up ongoing exchanges of business delegations between the two countries. At the meeting, an Agreement on Cooperation was also signed between the Chambers of Trade and Industry of Ukraine and the Sultanate of Oman.

The question of avoiding restrictive measures on exports of metal products from Ukraine to Gulf countries was also raised during the meeting. Minister Makbul bin Sultan assured the Ukrainian side that Oman was not only not planning to institute any restrictions but was actually interested in expanding imports of steel products from Ukraine.

Mr. Poroshenko also raised the issue of starting cooperation between the MFA’s Diplomatic Academy in Ukraine and the Diplomatic Institute of the MFA of the Sultanate of Oman. In relation to this, the two sides agreed to begin exchanging auditors between the two institutions.

They also agreed to look into the possibility of instituting a visa-free regime for groups of tourists visiting from Ukraine and the Sultanate.
