Ukraine’s steel industry output up 20% over Jan-May 2010
June 16, 2010
Over January–May 2010, Ukrainian steelmakers increased output of their main commodities by 19–21% compared to the same period of 2009, according to a statement by Viktor Lisoviy, vice president of Metallurgprom, an industry association, at the annual general meeting of representatives of mining and metallurgical enterprises in Dnipropetrovsk June 13.
Mr. Lisoviy’s reported figures indicated that over January–May of this year, the industry produced 11,843,000 tonnes of pig iron, which was 19% or 1,887,000 t more than during the first five months of 2009.
Output of steel for the same period rose 21% or 2,267,000 t to 13,481,000 t. Output of basic rolled steel increased 19% or 2,158,000 t to 12,673,000 t.
Mr. Lisoviy also stated that domestic steelmakers noted a fall in May output, compared to April, which reflected both shrinking demand for metal commodities on world markets and problems with deliveries of iron ore supplies at steel plants.
The vice presidentof Metallurgprom also noted that the trend towards production cutbacks has continued into June. He said that during the first week of June, average output of pig iron was only 63,000 t, compared to 77,400 t in May.
