Ministry of Agricultural Policy Offered to Increase Quota for Grain Export
February 14, 2008
Grain export quota can be increased up to 2.9 million tons.
Minister of Agricultural Policy of Ukraine Yuriy Melnik informed journalists about it today.
According to Mr. Melnik, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy offers to increase the quota for grain export up to the total amount stated in orders submitted by exporters. "We have received applications for 2.9 million tons of grain and we can review the issue of completing all of these orders,” said the Minister.
He also noted that his Ministry together with the Ministry of Economy offers to extend the term of grain export until the end of the current marketing year (presently the quota for grain export is set at the volume of 1.2 tons and is valid until April 1, 2008). "According to my data, the commission [on distribution of grain export quotas] will have a meeting on Monday," said the Minister.
“I believe that today we can review the issue of fully satisfying the applications of exporters. The amount that we are able to export is not exceeded," stated Mr. Melnik.
He stressed that for the time being all applications have been reviewed and approved. Mr. Melnik added that a huge chunk of work has already been done, and only technical issues remain.
It’s worth mentioning that in the beginning of January the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine started the registration of applications for licenses to export certain kinds of agricultural products.
The procedure was initiated to implement the Decree # 1179 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of September 26, 2007 “On the approval of quotas for certain agricultural products, the exporting of which is subject to licensing until March 31, 2008, and on the procedure of issuing such licenses.”
Let’s remind that the government of Viktor Yanukovych introduced quotas for grain export in the amount of 1.2 million tons. The start of exporting procedures was previously planned for November 1, 2007, and then the government shifted the date to January 1, 2008.
