Ukraine increases commodity exports

Ukraine’s negative balance of trade in goods amounted to US $2.1 billion over January–May 2010, which is an 8.3% improvement over the same period in 2009, when it was US $2.29bn.
Over January–May 2010, exports of goods from Ukraine jumped 31.4%, to US $18.769bn, while imports rose 25.9%, to US $20.869bn.
Over the first four months of 2010, the trade balance had improved by 5.8%, with exports of goods rising 28.1%, to US $14.563bn, and imports 23.0%, to US $16.444bn.
Ukraine trades goods with over 200 countries around the globe.
Exports to CIS countries constituted 35.1% of all exports by volume; to Asia, 27.8%; to Europe 25.8%, including 24.1% to the EU; to Africa, 6.8%; to the Americas, 4.3%; Australia and Oceania, 0.1%.

The share of certain categories of exports over January–May 2010, compared to January–May 2009 grew: ferrous metals, from 27.5% to 30.9%; energy, oil and petroleum products, from 4.3% to 7.3%; mechanical equipment from 6.2% to 6.5%; locomotives and rolling stock from 2.1% to 4.1%; animal and plant fats and oils from 4.9% to 5.2%; ores, slag and ash from 3.0% to 4.2%.
