Ukraine biggest sunoil exporter in world

Ukraine is now the largest sunflower seed oil exporter in the world, having expanded its geographic reach to include China, according to a recent statement from Stepan Kapshuk, President of the UkrOliaProm Association, an association of oilseed producers, at the 2010 Oilseed Market Forum.

“Ukraine has started delivering oil to China,” noted Mr. Kapshuk. “The first 35,000 tonnes have just been shipped.”

According to Mr. Kapshuk, previously Argentina was the main supplier of sunseed oil to the Chinese market. Today, he noted, Ukraine supplies oil to 65 countries.

In the current marketing year, September 2009-August 2010, Mr. Kapshuk said that Ukraine exported 2.5-2.6mn tonnes of sunflower seed oil, compared to 2.1mn t in 2008/2009. This has allowed the country to take first place in the sunoil export market, said Mr. Kapshuk, beating out the European Union and the Russian Federation.

As reported earlier, UkrOliaProm expects sunflower seed oil processing in the current marketing year to reach nearly 3 million t in Ukraine, compared to a total of 2.5mn t in 2008/2009.

Domestic demand for sunoil is only around 500,000 t per year.
