Yuschenko: Ukraine Should Strengthen Its Positions On The Grain Market
February 28, 2008
According to the President Viktor Yuschenko, Ukraine is planning to increase its grain harvest up to 50 million tons within a year or two through the new policies in the agricultural sector. "We should reach the grain harvest of 50 million tons in a year or two. This will strengthen our presence on the world market".
The President mentioned that the former government made a number of mistakes in its agricultural policies. In particular, it brought about price increase and grain export limitations; however, the new government intends to correct all these mistakes.
"The strategic goal of Ukraine is to be regularly present at the international agricultural market as a seller", Yuschenko stated, reminding that Ukraine is the 6th largest world grain exporter.
According to the President, the situation can be improved by budget motivation, structural changes of cultivated areas and investment increases.
He emphasized that the planned liberalization of agricultural market will stimulate the flow of investors into agricultural sector of the country.
As informed, according to preliminary data, Ukraine convoked 29.3 million tons of grain (including corn) after re-processing in 2007 which is 14.5% less compared to the harvest of 2006.
