September 29, 2010
On September 24, Ukraine joined the Energy Community. The signing of the memorandum on Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty on the Founding of the Energy Community took place in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.
The official signing ceremony involved Ukraine’s Minister of Fuel and Energy Yuriy Boyko and Macedonia’s Minister of Economy and President of the Energy Community, Fatmir Besimi.
Mr. Boyko addressed those present, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s acceptance into the Energy Community and saying that this event was a step on the way to the European integration of Ukraine’s energy sector.
“We see our membership in the Energy Community as a practical step towards Ukraine’s real integration into the EU’s internal market, especially its energy component,” the Minister stated. Mr. Boyko also noted that Ukraine has already undertaken major reforms in its energy sector, such as adopting the Law “On the basis for the functioning of a natural gas market in Ukraine,” which fully meets the norms of EU legislation in energy and regulates relations on the gas market. European integration, he says, is one of the top priorities of the energy policy of Ukraine’s current Government.
