Foreign Investments Take On Building Materials

March 27, 2008

In 2007, US $250 million in foreign capital was invested in Ukraine’s building materials sector, which is more than in the two previous years. In 2007, some 150 Ukrainian enterprises attracted investments from abroad. About half of them are companies in wood-processing, plastic building products, and stone quarrying. Housing starts also rose in 2007, by almost 20% over 2006 levels, while total commercial space under construction was 200% more than the indicator for 2006.

Ukraine’s construction sector is actually growing faster than the building materials sector. In the course of the entire year, specialized publications regularly highlighted complaints about the lack of construction materials such as concrete. This situation, which is forecast to last at least until 2010, will attract investments into the building materials sector, including from abroad.

The largest volumes of foreign investment were channeled into production of such commodities as dry gypsum mixtures, ceramic plumbing fixtures, concrete and fiberglass products, wood processing, plastic building products, and bricks. Still, in most of these sectors, the bigger share of investment has gone into one or two large-scale projects. Five enterprises alone in this sector attracted US $10 million in investment in 2007, which is more than 50% of the total. About 20 investments ranging from US $1 million to US $10 million account for another third, and all the remaining projects for less than 10%.

Investment came to the building materials sector from 37 countries in 2007, 17 of which represent investments exceeding US $1 million. The largest volume of investments, about a third, came from Germany. Second and third were Great Britain and Poland. Taken together, these three countries accounted for more than half of all foreign investments in the building materials sector. Significant investments come from such countries as Turkey, Estonia, Austria, and Italy. Russia is not in the Top 10 list of the largest investors.
