Ukraine To Become 152nd WTO Member In One Month

In 30 days Ukraine will become the 152nd member of the World Trade Organization. This was announced by Andriy Honcharuk Deputy Head of the Presidential Secretariat.
Honcharuk noted that today the President has signed the Law on ratification of the Protocol on Ukraine’s Accession to the WTO. In his words, in the nearest time a relevant report will be transmited to Geneva in connection with the signing of the Law by the Head of State. “Today or tomorrow a relevant declaration will be sent,” said Honcharuk.
He also reminded that after this Ukraine will automatically become a member of the organization within 30 days.
It should be reminded that today the President of Ukraine Viktor Yuschenko has signed the Law “On ratification of the Protocol on Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization” No. 250-VI.
On April 10, 2008, the Verkhovna Rada ratified the Protocol on Ukraine’s accession to the WTO. It garnered the support of 411 members of parliament. The ratification was backed by 164 MPs of the Regions Party, 155 MPs of BYT, 72 – of OU-PSD, and 20 – of the Lytvyn Bloc. The Communists refused to vote for the ratification.
On February 5, the President Viktor Yuschenko and the WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy signed the Protocol on Ukraine’s accession to the WTO. The package of documents – the Protocol together with the annexes – is to be ratified by the Verkhovna Rada by July 4. The WTO General Council is to announce Ukraine’s full-fledged membership in the organization within 30 days upon the receipt of the official report concerning the ratification.
