Ukraine Using its Agricultural Potential by 25%

July 15, 2008

According to the estimates of experts from Europe and the World Bank, Ukraine’s agricultural potential is used by 25-30%. This was announced today by Leonid Kozachenko, President of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC), during a press conference.

“If Ukraine uses its agricultural potential by 100%, we will be able to achieve an output worth USD 45-50 billion (in the last year’s benchmark prices). And this means that we will be able to export products worth USD 30-40 billion,” LIGABusinessInform reporter refers to L. Kozachenko as saying.

“If the yield of grain crops on the Ukrainian fields is compared to the yield on the fields of the USA and the EU countries, it is 3 times lower than in the USA and 2.5 times lower compared to the EU,” the expert noted.

Comparing the British and Ukrainian average yield of grain crops, L. Kozachenko said that in Britain it has been 6.4 tons per hectare for the last five years, and in Ukraine the figure is 3 tons per hectare. However, in his words, the use of mineral fertilizers in Great Britain exceeds the Ukrainian level 16 times, and they use 3.5 times more crop protecting agents. The level of supplies with the agricultural equipment in Great Britain 7-10 times exceeds the Ukrainian figures.

“That is to say, if we improve the resource we use for production at least twice, we will be able to double the grain output in Ukraine, of course, taking into account the weather and climatic conditions, land, and other advantages of the national agricultural economy,” the expert believes.

According to UAC President, today, the gross output of agricultural products in Ukraine is estimated approximately at USD 20 billion.
