A Record Grain Harvest is Expected in Ukraine
July 25, 2008
In 2008 a 45-48 million tons of grain are expected to be collected in Ukraine. This was reported today by Leonid Kozachenko, the President of the Ukrainian Public Organization “Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation”.
“This year grain harvest in Ukraine should break the record. If we evaluate a biological potential of this harvest, it should make up 45-48 million tons”, - L.Kozachenko stated, whose comments are cited by a reporter of LIGABusinessInform. Nevertheless, at the same time he mentioned the fact that a series of problems can interfere with grain collection and the real amount of harvest may be cut.
In particular, L. Kozachenko mentioned that we lack for storage areas, gas and technical equipment. “Nowadays, rape collection is our number one priority, which demands huge storage areas and intense drying”, - L.Kozachenko noted, adding that rape collection is a profitable business with one ton of rape cost of three thousand hryvnias. At the same time, the price at the world market continues to rise.
L.Kozachenko also mentioned that in 2008 a ton of collected wheat cost 1 200 hryvnias, while in 2007 the price was 750-800 hryvnias a ton. According to L.Kozachenko, retention of price for social kinds of bread has led to material losses for the Ukrainian rural population in the amount of 15 billion hryvnias.
At that, he predicts that on the whole Ukraine can collect from 80 to 100 million ton of grain each year, while the world market is deficient of 50 million ton of grain and the prices are rising. In this he sees new export possibilities for the Ukrainian grain.
