Ukraine To Become WTO Member As Early As December

Ukraine has signed the bilateral protocol with Kyrgyzstan on accession to the World Trade Organization and should become a member by year-end, President Viktor Yushchenko announced.
Mr. Yushchenko said that, having signed the final protocol with Kyrgyzstan yesterday, Ukraine has settled the issue of WTO accession.
“This means that all the procedural issues have been resolved,” the President said and expressed confidence that at the next WTO Council meeting, which is due December 15-20, Ukraine will officially be accepted into this organization.
Also, the Finance Ministry has announced that the Cabinet of Ministers intends to allocate US $27.3 million in humanitarian aid to Kyrgyzstan. The Committee for Economic Policy and European Integration has approved a draft Cabinet resolution on the allocation of humanitarian aid to Kyrgyzstan.
“According to this resolution, humanitarian aid in the amount of UAH 138 million will be transferred to the Kyrgyz Republic to cope with the aftermath of an earthquake that has caused destruction,” reads the statement.
Recently, talks concerning Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization took place in Kyrgyzstan between the Ukrainian delegation headed by the First Vice Premier and Minister of Finance Mykola Azarov and the Kyrgyz delegation headed by Economy and Finance Minister Akilbek Zhaparov.
As reported earlier, a source at Ukraine’s Economy Ministry said that, should Ukraine complete talks with Kyrgyzstan and sign a protocol on mutual access to goods and services markets with this country, it would be able to join the WTO as early as by year-end.
Ukraine completed negotiations with all members of the WTO Working Group, except for Kyrgyzstan, having signed 49 protocols on mutual access on markets of goods and services much earlier.
