Ukraine’s Defense Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov plans to present the new domestic tank, Oplot, to Ukraine and the world on Independence Day. Mr. Yekhanurov made this announcement in Minsk during the Fifth International Arms and Weapons Technology Exhibition taking place in the capital of Belarus.
Meanwhile, many countries have already expressed interest in the new tanks, according to domestic press reports, including Azerbaijan, Syria and Kuwait.
The Oplot T-84U was designed at the Kharkiv-based Morozov Machine-Building Design Bureau on the basis of the T-80U. The tank is capable of operating in a wide range of temperatures, from -40ºC to +55ºC. Its standard version shows impressive speed, maneuverability and throughput. In contrast to the T-80UD, it has a new turret bustle incorporating an armored ammunition compartment, thermal imaging sighting, satellite navigation system, Nozh explosive reactive armor, Varta integrated optical electronic countermeasure system, digital firing control system, assisted aggregate fueling and more. In terms of weaponry, the Oplot has a 125-mm smoothbore KBA3 gun running 40 rounds, 28 of which are in an automatic compartment. In addition, the tank has a 12.7mm Zenith machine gun (450 bullets) and an anti-infantry 7.62mm coax machine gun (1,250 bullets).
